DreamCatcher's Action/Adventures

As I mentioned earlier, DreamCatcher is also branching out from its traditional adventure roots to publish other genres -- mainly action/adventures. Here are some of those titles:

Jekyll & Hyde is a 3D action/adventure game, obviously based on the literary characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. However, the graphics and plot will both be highly stylized, rather than historically accurate recreations of the book's Victorian setting. The game takes place about 10 years after the original story, and as Dr. Jekyll, you must rescue your kidnapped daughter while deciding if and when to reactivate the Mr. Hyde persona. Jekyll & Hyde is due out this summer for both PC and PlayStation 2.

Not to be confused with Westwood's real-time strategy game, DreamCatcher's Dune is an action/adventure game that's heavy on the action. The game puts you in the role of Paul Atreides, after the rival House Harkonnen has killed your father, Duke Leto. As in the original book, you will lead the nomadic Fremen to avenge your father's death and bring independence to the planet Arrakis. The exact missions, however, appear to depart from the events in the book.

From what little I saw of the game, it looks to be a little kinder than many other action-heavy action/adventures. For example, an icon lights up in the corner of the screen to help you find a hot-spot where you're supposed to climb onto a rock, instead of making you run and jump repeatedly until you find the right spot on your own. Stealth also appears to be an important component of many action sequences. Dune is scheduled for a Winter 2001 release on the PC.

From Dusk Till Dawn is primarily an action game, based on the film of the same name. While it is an action game, it does have a pedigree that should be familiar to adventure gamers -- it is being written by Hubert Chardot, who was also behind the Alone in the Dark series, and is being developed by The Devil Inside's team, using an updated version of that game's engine. Expect the PC version this Winter.

I didn't get to see too much of Zorro in action, but what I did see primarly showed the expected swordfighting and duels. Stealthier missions will also be included when this game is released in Fall 2001 on both the PC and PlayStation 2.

And speaking of the PlayStation, DreamCatcher will be releasing ports of Dracula Resurrection and In Cold Blood. PS One titles should sell in DreamCatcher's typical $19.99-29.99 (US dollar) price range, but their representative has told me that their upcoming PS2 titles will sell for $39.99-49.99. I guess you can't complain too loudly if Sony is subsidizing the cost of your hardware, but I do wonder whether these prices will affect sales.
