Last But Not Least

Many were excited about Microsoft's action-oriented RPG, Dungeon Siege. It appears to be a fairly easy game to learn and control, with RTS-style waypoints and formations to help manage your party. The graphics are fully 3D, and the designers promise that you'll never see a loading screen after the start of the game. Beyond that, I really wasn't able to get a good feel for how the game will actually play, so I'll just leave my comments at that. The game should be available in Fall 2001.

A few nearly-finished games made return appearances at this year's E3. Infogrames was showing Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare on the PlayStation, but the game will also be available on PC, Dreamcast, and Game Boy Color this summer. While the earlier Alone in the Dark games were fairly adventure-oriented, the fourth game in the series is described as "survival horror" and appears to be more action-oriented than its predecessors.

The original developers behind the hit RPG Fallout have all but finished their latest game, Sierra's Arcanum. The code is basically done, but Sierra is holding the game until September so that they can prepare translations for a simultaneous international release.

Like Fallout, this should be a detailed old-school RPG, with one minor twist -- it's set in a world where magic and Industrial Revolution-era technology co-exist uneasily. Zeppelins fly above lands populated with elves, and your character will have to choose between magical and technological paths. Even though it's set in an entirely different era, the game looks and plays a lot like an updated version of Fallout. You may see this as a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you thought of the earlier game.

A multiplayer option, including an easy-to-use world editor, will ship with the game. Pre-determined character types (like "air elementalist" or "shopkeeper") are also provided to help novices manage their characters without having to worry about details during the game.
