Achievements

Below are hints on how to get all of Portal's achievements. Some of them can't be avoided while playing through the game since they're required actions, while some require a lot of extra trouble, and are easy to miss.

If you're playing on the PC, you'll have to be connected to the Internet and have Steam in online mode in order to get credit for your achievements, or to even view the achievement list. However, if you're playing in offline mode, you can still see if you've done something achievement-related by using the PC console.
How can I use the console to check on achievements?

Portal has one long-term achievement that you'll have to work on for awhile before you can finish it.
Camera Shy (PORTAL_DETACH_ALL_CAMERAS)

This second set of achievements includes ones that can be done in several different spots throughout the game. They're put in the order that you can first accomplish them.
Terminal Velocity (PORTAL_INFINITEFALL)
Friendly Fire (PORTAL_HIT_TURRET_WITH_TURRET)
Long Jump (PORTAL_LONGJUMP)

This third set of achievements lists ones that have to be done in one particular spot. All of them are required for continuing the game, anyway. They're listed in the order that you come across them.
Lab Rat (PORTAL_GET_PORTALGUNS)
Fratricide (PORTAL_KILL_COMPANIONCUBE)
Partygoer (PORTAL_ESCAPE_TESTCHAMBERS)
Heartbreaker (PORTAL_BEAT_GAME)

The achievements in this final set have to do with the advanced and challenge versions of Chambers 13 thru 18.
