Downloading Hints with the UHS Reader

The UHS Reader can download the hints you need, as long as your computer is connected to the Internet.

To start downloading files, select "Download New Hints" from the "File" menu, or click on the "New Hints" button on the top toolbar.  The UHS Reader will then connect to our server to get a current list of available hint files.  Once that is done, you will see a window that looks something like:

Download New Files

If all you need is hints for a single game, you can simply double-click on the title of the game (for example, "Myst III: Exile").  The UHS Reader will download the hints from our server to your computer and then open the hints you just downloaded.  The next time you need the same hints, you can find them under "My Hints" – you can also get there by selecting "Open My Hints" from the "File" menu or by clicking on the "Open" button on the main toolbar.

If you want to download hints for multiple games at the same time, select those hints in the list of titles – hold CONTROL while clicking on each of the titles, or left-click and hold down the mouse button to draw a box around the titles you want.  When you've selected all of the titles you want, click on the "Download" button on the download toolbar (shown in the screenshot above).  All of the hints will be downloaded to your computer, and you can find them under "My Hints" whenever you need them.

If a game is available or commonly known under multiple titles, you will see both titles in the listing.  For example, in the screenshot above, you will see both "Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None" and "And Then There Were None".  (The "Agatha Christie..." title has a shortcut to indicate that this is not the preferred title.)  You can click on either title to open or download those hints.  If you select both the preferred name and the shortcut when downloading or copying multiple titles hints, the corresponding file will only be downloaded or copied once.

There are also a few options that will let you change which hints are displayed in the download window.  The two buttons on the left of the download toolbar will hide or show hints that are not yet on your computer – click on "New Only" to list only hints that were released since the last time you checked for new hints, and click on "All" to list all hints available for download.  Clicking on either of these buttons a second time once they are selected hides all hints available for download.  The "My Hints" button just to the right of those three can be used to hide or show hints that you have already downloaded.  When you first go to download hints, "Show All" is selected and "My Hints" is turned off.

You can also change how the list is sorted by clicking on the top of any column heading.  For example, to sort hints by their release date, just click on the "Updated" column header.
