How can I sell big-dollar items to merchants?
  • 1 of 13: The two best merchants in the game are the Creeper in Ghorak Manor in Caldera (Ald'ruhn region) and the talking Mudcrab merchant on an island in the Bal Fell region. They both buy and sell items at cost, and they have more money to spend than most other merchants in the game ($5,000 for Creeper and $10,000 for the crab).
  • 2 of 13: Even though he has less to spend than the Mudcrab, the Creeper will probably be your most frequent sell point because he's so convenient to reach. Simply enter any Mages Guild and have the guild guide teleport you to Caldera. Also note that the Creeper buys magic and miscellaneous items, but the Mudcrab doesn't.
  • 3 of 13: If you really want the Mudcrab, you could set a Mark spell at his location when you find him and then cast Recall whenever you want to visit him and sell stuff. When you're through, cast Almsivi Intervention to get to Molag Mar or Divine Intervention to get to Ebonheart.
  • 4 of 13: More good news: both the Creeper's and Mudcrab's gold supplies regenerate every 24 hours! That means that after you sell as much as they can buy, you can come back and do it again after adventuring around for a day (or just resting and waiting).
  • 5 of 13: The tricky part is selling an item to the Creeper that's worth more than $5,000 or to the Mudcrab merchant that's worth more than $10,000. There is a way, though it's a bit tedious, and you'll probably make more gold than you'll ever need just by selling $5,000 and cheaper items to Creeper on regular occasions.
  • 6 of 13: PATCH NOTE: If you have the Tribunal or Bloodmoon update to the game, you'll have the "Seller Max" button that you can use to take a loss on an expensive item or set of items. For instance, if you have a sword worth $12,000 but are willing to part with it for $5,000, you could hand it to the Creeper and then hit the "Seller Max" button to set the asked-for amount instantly to $5,000. That sure beats clicking on the minus button 7,000 times! However, you lose 7,000 gold on the transaction. Read on to find out how to sell big-dollar items without taking a big loss.
  • 7 of 13: Remember that when you buy an item from a merchant, the gold you pay him for the item is added to his available-to-spend total. That's the key to the whole thing.
  • 8 of 13: I'll use the Creeper as my example, since he's easy-access. He starts out each day with $5,000 to spend. His inventory includes everything he started the game with that you haven't bought, plus everything you've ever sold him. Starting to get the idea?
  • 9 of 13: What if you'd sold Creeper a $2,500 helmet on a previous day? He'll still have it. If you buy it back from him before you sell him anything today, he'll then have his original $5,000 plus the $2,500 you just paid him, for a total of $7,500. You can now sell him something that's worth up to $7,500.
  • 10 of 13: If you buy more from him, he'll have more money to spend. So what if you have a sword worth $17,000 that you'd like to sell? Simple! Buy $12,000 worth of stuff from Creeper and then sell him the sword. As for the stuff you just bought (and probably don't want), wait 24 hours and sell some of it back to him. After several days, you can sell it all back to him.
  • 11 of 13: Yes, this is a bit time-consuming and tedious, especially if you have a $100,000 item you'd like to sell. It's probably not worth the trouble for *that* expensive an item, but this procedure is handy for items that are in the $5,001 to $30,000 or so price range. (Also remember that the Mudcrab merchant has twice as much money as Creeper, so you may prefer to do all this with him instead.)
  • 12 of 13: NOTE: After you raid the Great House vaults in Vivec or the Tower vaults at Ghostgate, you're going to have a huge inventory of items that you won't be able to sell right away. It's perfectly okay (and darn convenient) to take all those items to the Creeper and drop them on the floor next to him. No one will steal the items, and they're right there handy for you to pick up and sell on some future visit. If the floor gets too cluttered and starts causing game slowdowns, you can put a lot of the stuff in the crates next to the Creeper and in other containers throughout the manor.
  • 13 of 13: NOTE: Another useful tip related to all of this is that when your Speechcraft and Mercantile skills get way high, you may notice that regular merchants will sell you items for way less than they're worth (neat!) and buy items from you for way less than they're worth (NOT neat!). Once this starts, you can take advantage of the situation by buying expensive items from other merchants and selling them to the Creeper. The Caldera Mages Guild is a real gold mine for this, what with all the valuable potions, scrolls, and enchanted weapons you can buy there. (By the time you sell them all to Creeper, the mages' inventories will probably have refilled, so you can do this over and over again!) You can also buy booze at Shenk's Shovel to sell to the Creep, since he buys all types of potions.
