The 7th Guest Hints

Microscope Game (Laboratory)

  • 1 of 8: Since the computer is not predictable, there's no guaranteed solution to this this puzzle.  The best I can give are a few observation as to what strategies worked for me.
  • 2 of 8: First of all, you want to gain squares that aren't exposed to empty spaces. If you leave your cells near an empty space, they can just be recaptured.
  • 3 of 8: If you have to leave newly-captured squares vulnerable to open spaces, try to leave lots of little open areas so that the computer won't capture too many of your pieces at once.
  • 4 of 8: So an "L" shape is the very dangerous; the computer will form a safe square if it lands in the opening of your L.  An "O" (a 3x3 box with a hole in the middle) is by far the worst shape you can form.
  • 5 of 8: A _|_ (like a capital "T") or + sign is safer, because you'll still keep some of your pieces in an area, no matter what the computer does.
  • 6 of 8: A diagonal of three or four squares is also good, especially as a starting move.  With a diagonal, you can always take back the computer's captures.
  • 7 of 8: Also make sure that the computer can't make any moves that will allow it to bury some of its pieces.
  • 8 of 8: Other than that, you basically have to try what works for you.  I've seen a lot of strategies listed everywhere, but they don't seem to be all that reliable for most people.
