Alone in the Dark 4: The New Nightmare Hints
Can you give me some combat tips?
1 of 5: In most cases, fighting is really just a matter of figuring out whether you want to fight or run. Monsters will often respawn when you leave and return to a room, so killing them may just be a waste of the limited ammunition that's available. If all you're doing is running through a room to get to another, I recommend that you run past the monster and skip the fight. If you're lucky, the creatures may have left by the time you go back through that room.
2 of 5: Also, if a creature is holding onto you, you can sometimes shake it free and reduce the damage it does to you by trying to fire your weapon (LEFT CTRL + SPACE on the PC). You won't actually fire, but you can get enough distance to keep running or shoot later.
3 of 5: About the only other thing to do is choosing your weapon. If a creature looks small, odds are that it can be killed easily with a revolver shot. Otherwise, as long as you only fight when you have to, it's safe to use your most powerful weapon on a creature -- you'll still have enough ammunition for later. I recommend that you let the game auto-aim for you, as there's generally no advantage to using the free-look mode to aim at a particular target.
4 of 5: The only real trick is that a few weapons, like the lightning gun and plasma cannon, only work at close range. You'll have to decide whether it's worth getting close enough to your targets to use these weapons. Personally, I say it's worth using the lightning gun, since it's fairly powerful, but the plasma cannon isn't quite as useful.
5 of 5: There are few larger "bosses" whom you will encounter later in the game, and it will take more than just shooting at them randomly. I have covered these in the appropriate sections of the hint file.
