Alone in the Dark 4: The New Nightmare Hints
About This File
I based this file on the US release of the PC version of the game. To the best of my knowledge, the gameplay is exactly the same in the PSX version, and I expect that it will be the same in other versions that should be released after the writing of this file (like the PS2 version).
Just to avoid any potential confusion between versions, I haven't explicitly referred to the disc numbers in the hints. On the PC, the gameplay is split up across two CDs, numbered #2 and #3 (#1 is for installation), but the PSX apparently uses just CD #1 and
However, I have still broken the puzzles up into topics that correspond to the two halves of the game. For Carnby, "Opening Scenes and Inside the Manor" is for the first disc, and "After the Manor" and "World of Darkness" are for the second disc. For Aline, "Inside the Manor" and "Manor Grounds" are for the first disc, and the other two topics are for her second.
As to the puzzles themselves, Alone in the Dark can be a fairly linear game -- you generally must solve puzzles in a specific order. Within each location, I've listed puzzles in the order in which I solved them, and I've tried to note when puzzles must be solved. If you find you can't do what's mentioned in one set of hints, however, try looking at earlier questions to make sure you're not missing anything that must be done earlier. You may also want to look at hints for other locations -- for example, check the second floor hints if you don't see anything that applies to you in the first floor hints.
Also, note that not all doors are meant to be unlocked, and even those that can be unlocked must often be unlocked at a specific time. Others may "mysteriously" lock or unlock themselves. If you don't see a hint about how to unlock a particular door, it's safe to assume that you shouldn't worry about that door.
Finally, as a word of warning, Alone in the Dark seems to label floors inconsistently. For example, the in-game map calls the lowest floor "First Floor," but if you examine a key to that same floor, it will be labeled "Ground Floor." I will follow the convention used by the in-game map of calling the floors "first floor," "second floor," and "attic," and *not* the one used on the keys of "ground floor," "first floor," and "second floor."
