Anachronox Hints

Can you explain how NRGs work?

  • 1 of 6: NRGs are basically the spell points of Anachronox.  Each time you cast a MysTech effect, you spend a certain number of NRG.  The exact number of NRG depends on the particular piece of MysTech, but each higher level of effect always costs twice as much as the previous one.
  • 2 of 6: You replenish your NRG with glodents, batts, or similar objects, sort of like drinking a mana potion in the average fantasy RPG.  You'll find these objects along the way in your quests, or you can buy them at most of the stores throughout the game.  (The exact objects tend to change, with later objects replenishing more NRGs.)
  • 3 of 6: The number of NRG that you can have available depends on which shieldcell you're wearing.
  • 4 of 6: Each cell has several parameters: capacity, max shield, and throughput.  Each cell can hold a maximum number of NRG, and you must divide those points between your shield and MysTech.  Of course, you can allocate only up to the max shield number of NRG on your shield.  Each NRG is worth an extra 10 hit points (HP) in battle, and these HP are always reset at the start of each battle.  Go to the party screen, choose a character, view his stats, and click on the shield bar to choose how many NRG to dedicate.  The NRG you allocate to shields are not consumed, even if you lose those HP, so you don't have to keep using glodents to get new shields each battle.  You can't change the shield settings once a battle has started, though, so the NRG are temporarily "lost" until the next battle.
  • 5 of 6: The remaining NRG can be used to cast whatever piece of MysTech your character is using, up to the shield's throughput.  This means that if a cell holds 128 NRG but has a 64 NRG throughput, you can still only use 64 NRG in any single effect.  But you can still cast 2 64 NRG effects in a row without refilling your shieldcell.
  • 6 of 6: In case you're wondering, these different numbers are represented in the bar in your player stats section showing how many NRG you have.  The dark green part of the bar on the left, if any, shows how many NRG are allocated to shields.  The striped green part on the right shows the throughput of the shield.  The section in the middle shows the rest of your NRG in a light green.
