Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura Hints

King Praetor wants me to collect his taxes from Black Root.

  • 1 of 14: To finish this quest, you obviously have to go to Black Root.
  • 2 of 14: Having the conversation with King Praetor will mark the town on your map.
  • 3 of 14: So when you feel like it, head there, and go talk to the town's mayor.
  • 4 of 14: He'll tell you that he's decided to join Tarant in the unified kingdom and no longer owes taxes to Praetor.
  • 5 of 14: Keep trying to convince him that he should pay taxes, and he'll eventually ask you to retrieve a ceremonial dagger from some thieves to the north.
  • 6 of 14: The thief camp can be reached by going to the train tracks and heading across a small land bridge to the northwest.
  • 7 of 14: Once you get to the thieves, there are a bunch of ways to get the dagger.
  • 8 of 14: If you want to be good, just kill them. It's a slightly hard battle if you're low level, but if you've been leveling up, it should be fairly simple.
  • 9 of 14: You can also get the dagger by stealing it from him (pick pocket), or by paying him 300 gold.
  • 10 of 14: Lastly, if you're feeling kind of evil, you can do some quests for him.
  • 11 of 14: One is to steal an Idol from a hedge wizard in town. The wizard lives in a small shack in the western part of town. The idol is in a chest in the back of the house, so you can get it from there.
  • 12 of 14: The second quest option is to get him some potion. To do that, just talk to Grunwalde the chemist and tell him you have a major rat problem, where they're big as orcs, and he'll give you the poison you need.
  • 13 of 14: However you do it, once you have the knife, bring it back to the mayor, and suggest that the Tarantian guards couldn't even protect him from petty thieves.
  • 14 of 14: He'll give you the taxes (or you can pick pocket them from him, if you want to mess with the game system), and you can just bring them back to King Praetor for a reward.
