How can I get into Bates' mansion?
1 of 14: You should probably do most, if not all, of the quests in the city before getting into the mansion, as it will make for less running back and forth and juggling the main quest with the smaller ones.
2 of 14: There are a number of ways to get into the mansion.
3 of 14: One involves Cedric Appleby, who will want you to both destroy Bates' steam engine, and then sneak into his house to get some evidence that Bates is a fraud.
4 of 14: You really don't need to do all that if you want to get in that way. Just accept the first quest (destroying the steam engine) and then rat out Appleby to the guards at Bates' mansion to be allowed entrance.
5 of 14: If you have high Persuasion, you can try to convince the guard that you're an old friend of Bates' and he'll let you in if you do it right.
6 of 14: Otherwise, you'll have to do a quest for him to be allowed entrance.
7 of 14: The quest is simply to guard Bates' factory.
8 of 14: Go there -- it's the large factory to the east of Bates' mansion.
9 of 14: Talk to the guard at the front gate, and he'll let you in.
10 of 14: Then just advance time until it's a little past midnight, and the offenders will appear.
11 of 14: They'll attack you right off, so kill them. They're all pretty easy, especially if you're fairly high level.
12 of 14: Once you've dealt with them, wait until morning and go back to the guard, who'll let you into the mansion.
13 of 14: Then just head up the stairs and talk to Bates in the room on the left.
14 of 14: He'll give you a whole bunch of background story and will point you in the direction of the Black Mountain Mines.
