Arx Fatalis Hints
Combat
1 of 6: Combat in Arx occurs in real time, and therefore depends in part on your own reflexes. However, reflexes alone will not see you through most of the battles in the game, and so a few strategies for successful combat follow.
2 of 6: The most basic approach to combat is to engage your enemy with a close-range weapon such as a sword. In general, you want to stay out of range of your opponent as long as you can to avoid taking damage, while maximizing the damage you inflict. Notice the gem at the bottom of the screen while you are in combat mode: the more brightly the gem glows, the more damaging a blow you will deal. Try backing away while preparing your attack, then close in on the enemy when the gem is fully lit, striking your blow, and retreating again to prepare the next attack.
3 of 6: By using bows and spells, you can avoid getting in range of your opponent, by attacking from a distance. An additional benefit of using ranged attacks is that, if you are attacking from a concealed location, the enemy may not be able to find you and retaliate.
4 of 6: If a battle proves too tough for you, you can always run away, but be aware that most enemies are capable of moving just as quickly as you. To lose your pursuer, try jumping onto or off of ledges and balconies, or crawling through tight spaces where the enemy can't reach you. When you've got to make a quick getaway, cast the Speed spell to outdistance your opponent.
5 of 6: Normally, you will receive no information on your opponent's state of health during combat. By improving your Ethereal Link skill, you can gain an idea of how much damage it will take to kill an opponent. After each successful strike, the gem at the bottom of your screen will flash a color indicating how close the target is to dying, ranging from green (alive and kicking) to red (about to keel over). This skill only works when attacking with a weapon, not with spells.
6 of 6: Use the element of surprise to your advantage. When exploring a new area, pay attention to the surroundings so that you won't be ambushed. The Stealth skill can help by muffling the sounds of your movement, and allowing you to hide from opponents or sneak up on them from behind.
