Arx Fatalis Hints
Mage
1 of 5: Those players who love magic will find much enjoyment in Arx's unique spellcasting system. Magic in Arx is extremely powerful, and focusing on magical attacks is generally the easiest route to success in the game. However, casting spells does require some practice, both on your part and your character's.
2 of 5: The most important skill when developing a mage-type character is the Casting skill. This skill directly influences the power of each spell you cast, as well as providing a resistance to magical attacks from other creatures. For each 10 percent of skill in Casting, the effectiveness of a spell is multiplied by one additional level. This means that a Fireball cast by a character with 60 skill in Casting will inflict twice as much damage as that of a character with only 30 skill.
3 of 5: While magic is powerful, it is not without limits. There will be occasions, particularly in the beginning of the game when you have yet to collect a decent arsenal of runes, as well as the inevitable moment when you realize you've exhausted your supply of mana, when an alternative approach is required. A few points in Close Combat or Projectile skill will grant you at least some ability in using conventional weapons.
4 of 5: Several other skills may be of use to a magic-type character, depending upon your style of play. Object Knowledge in particular may come in handy in allowing you to brew healing and mana potions, which are often of critical importance during tough battles. The Ethereal Link skill is said to increase the rate at which your mana reserves are replenished, although the effect seems to be negligible. For an extra edge in combat, spend some points on Stealth. Often, you may cast spells from the shadows without revealing your presence; and it is infinitely easier to draw the runes required for a spell and aim it accurately before your opponent has noticed you than to do so during the heat of battle. Finally, you may wish to increase your Defense skill to gain an improvement in armor class. This skill is particularly important for a spellcaster, as most of the better pieces of armor in the game carry a penalty to Casting skill.
5 of 5: Assigning attribute points for a mage-type character couldn't be easier. You'll want to dump nearly all of those points into Mental. Mental directly affects the total amount of mana available to you, as well as influencing nearly all of the skills which are important to a mage. If you find yourself falling back on melee weapons often during combat, a few points in Strength will increase your damage output, and allow you to use more powerful weapons. Constitution is useful for beefing up your hit points, which can compensate for the lack of good armor for mage-type characters.
