1 of 8: Help is within your reach.
2 of 8: Did you look around the boat carefully when it was floating in the ocean?
3 of 8: If you did, you would have found a lantern. Right-click to open your inventory and check for the lantern.
4 of 8: The lantern won't help at all when you first pick it up -- it's not throwing any light at all.
5 of 8: The year is 1904. This isn't an electric lantern -- it's one that you will need to light.
6 of 8: Look in your inventory for matches (don't ask how they stayed dry through all that!).
7 of 8: To light the lantern: click on the matches, move the match cursor over the lantern, and click again.
8 of 8: Click on the working lantern to pick it up. Lift the lantern away from the inventory area at the bottom of the screen and right-click to close the inventory screen and begin using the lantern.
