Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened Hints
How can I figure this puzzle out?
1 of 8: You start off with these already done for you:
3 -> 2 7 -> 2 9 -> 3 10 -> 4
2 of 8: Since the numbers you end up with are always smaller than the starting numbers, and since both the 3 and the 7 give the same result, it's pretty obvious that division is the basic math operation being used here. But how exactly is it being used?
3 of 8: Going by the four numbers you're given, you can tell that the answers aren't simply the quotients or remainders of division.
4 of 8: What if the result numbers are some sort of count?
5 of 8: Like maybe the sum total of all the different integers that can divide evenly (remainder of zero) into the hour numbers?
6 of 8: Looking at it that way, a starting value of 3 would yield a 2, because there are exactly two integers (1 and 3) that will divide evenly into 3.
7 of 8: A 7 would yield a 2 because only two integers (1 and 7) will divide evenly into 7. 9 can be divided by three numbers (1, 3, and 9), and 10 can be divided by four numbers (1, 2, 5, and 10). And there we have it!
8 of 8: To finish the puzzle, all you have to do is count up how many integers will divide evenly into each hour number.
