Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened Hints
The first thing Holmes does is ask me a quiz question! What's the answer?
of 17: He expects you to figure out the meaning of the numbers that little Davy wrote on the chalkboard back at Arneson's place.
of 17: You have absolutely nothing to go on except the "Davy's Message" document, so study it to see what you can figure out.
of 17: First off, notice that the number 1 must be represented by what looks like a large, badly drawn carat (^) symbol. All the other digits are easy to make out.
of 17: Also notice that there's one slash (/) symbol in the message, near the beginning.
of 17: If you look at all the digits before the slash, you'll realize that the digits 1 thru 9 are all there exactly once.
of 17: Start looking past the slash to see if that pattern repeats.
of 17: You'll see that the next numbers are 2, 1, 4, 6, 7, 9, 8, 3, 9 ... wait a minute! The 9 just repeated!
of 17: But before the 9 repeated, every digit from 1 to 9 *except 5* was present.
of 17: So maybe the first part of the secret code is a 5.
of 17: Starting with the second 9 you encountered, go along until you get another digit to repeat.
of 17: When you do, look at the numbers you've got to see which digit is missing. (There won't always be a missing one, but when there is, write it down.)
of 17: Keep that up until you've done the whole thing in order to get the 9-digit answer. (Or just read the next hint.)
of 17: The code is 564366134, so try that.
of 17: Holmes won't accept it! What could be wrong?
of 17: Notice that there's a large space between the two sets of numbers in the document.
of 17: So try putting a space between the code results you got from the two number sets.
of 17: That would make the answer 56436 6134, space included. Thankfully, Holmes will accept that!
