Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened Hints

How can I open the big, fancy iron doors in the cellar?

  • 1 of 16: Looking around for interactive items, you'll find a weird altar-like thing in the center of the room, plus two panels of three stone buttons each on both sides of the door.
  • 2 of 16: The two panels of stone buttons are what you use to open the door. The altar-like thing is just useful in gaining clues on what buttons to press, and in what order.
  • 3 of 16: The symbols you're seeing on the buttons and in various places on the room's walls should look familiar from somewhere else.
  • 4 of 16: There were four similar symbols scratched into the table behind the privacy curtain in the wharf's pub. You should've found them and noted them down earlier while looking for one of the manservant's kidnappers. If not, you can go do so now. (See link below.)
  • 5 of 16: To use the clue-gathering altar, choose the lantern in inventory and then click on the altar.
  • 6 of 16: You'll get a view of one of the two walls that have symbols painted on them, and you'll have a kind of C-shaped symbol projected on the wall by the lantern that you can move around.
  • 7 of 16: The idea here is that each of the symbols on the walls and on the door buttons are only parts of the four symbols you found etched on the table.
  • 8 of 16: Look at the first (leftmost) symbol from the table. Do you see that the lantern-projected symbol is the left half of that symbol?
  • 9 of 16: Scan the walls for the right half of that symbol. (Note that you can click on the bottom right part of the screen to switch walls.)
  • 10 of 16: Or actually, there's no need to find the right half of that symbol on the wall, since you can already tell what it looks like. The point is that the right half of the symbol is on the stone button that you need to press first.
  • 11 of 16: Looking the buttons over, you'll realize that it's the middle button on the left button panel.
  • 12 of 16: Now that you know how this gimmick works, repeat it with the table's other three symbols.
  • 13 of 16: You could keep using the clue altar, since all four of the table symbols have that same projected C-shaped symbol within them, or you could just look at your drawings of the other table symbols and see what button designs are those symbols minus the projected symbol.
  • 14 of 16: For instance, the symbol on the top button to the right of the door looks like the second table symbol with the C-shaped symbol missing, so that's the second button you need to press.
  • 15 of 16: Read on for the exact button-pressin' answer.
  • 16 of 16: First press the middle left button, then the top right button, then the bottom right button, then the top left button. That'll get those iron doors open!
