Bioshock 2 Hints
Combat Tips
of 10: As in most of these kinds of games, it's very important to use strafing and cover to your advantage when fighting anything that can shoot back at you. Also, the old retreat-and-fire technique is frequently handy, especially with enemies who charge you, like the thuggish splicers.
of 10: You will often see splicers in the distance before they see you. Whenever that happens, get out the rivet gun (or speargun if you have it), go into zoom mode, then aim for a head shot. It's harder to hit their heads than their bodies (especially if they're moving around), but you will get bonus damage for head shots, especially if you have the Headhunter tonic spliced in.
of 10: When you're wanting to conserve your guns' ammo, you can let splicers in an area see you, then retreat and wait under cover for them to come to you for a good drilling or drill-whacking. Hitting them with Electro Bolt right before drill-whacking will do extra damage.
of 10: Another ammo-conservative thing to do is use Telekinesis to throw heavy or explosive items at enemies. Doing so will cost you some EVE, so watch that you don't run out of EVE hypos unless you can get some more nearby. (Most Circus of Values vending machines will sell an unlimited number of them.)
of 10: Watch for enemies to enter pools of water, which will make your Electro Bolt attacks on them much more powerful. Likewise with Incinerate! and oil spills, especially if there are any explosive canisters or barrels near the spills.
of 10: Keep your supply of first aid kits up whenever you can, since using them in the middle of combat (or right afterward) is useful in keeping yourself healthy. You can carry up to five at a time, and you should usually have about that many in stock, especially if you wait until you find another first aid kit before you use one that you've got to heal yourself. (That isn't always possible, but it often is.)
of 10: If, like me, you hardly ever buy anything at vending machines, you'll usually have the max amount of money with you. Because of that, it may be better to pay to heal yourself at health stations most of the time instead of using first aid kits. Save them for when you have to heal quickly and there are no health stations around. (Or use first aid kits all the time and keep buying more from vending machines.)
of 10: Don't forget that splicers can heal themselves at health stations, too. Whenever you're fighting splicers (especially groups of them), try to hack or destroy any nearby health stations before combat begins. Hacking the stations is better, since the splicers will be killed when they try to use them, and they'll still be available for you to use. Destroying the stations is a lot quicker and easier, especially later in the game when the hacking minigames become harder, but do so only when necessary.
of 10: When you return to an area you haven't been in for awhile, watch out for new splicers. The game often puts them in areas you've previously cleared just to spice things up a bit. (And to give you more opportunities for using the Research Tips on splicers.)
of 10: Another thing to watch for when returning to old areas is lockboxes. Enemies you've killed will usually transform into lockboxes sooner or later, and they may contain some new items that weren't available on the corpses when you searched them. Look for these near hacked security devices especially, since enemies may have been killed by them when you weren't around.
