Bioshock 2 Hints

Trap Rivet/Spear Tips

  • 1 of 10: Bioshock 2 has two equivalents to the original Bioshock's trap bolts: trap rivets and trap spears.
  • 2 of 10: Trap rivets are the first ones you'll encounter. They look a lot like laser tripmines, but they're not explosive. Instead, they fire a rivet into whoever passes through their sensor beam.
  • 3 of 10: Once you get the rivet gun and pick up your first trap rivets, you can start firing them at surfaces to set up traps for nearby enemies. It's especially useful to set several of them to where you can lead enemies through them, since they'll "recognize" you and let you pass through their sensor beams un-riveted.
  • 4 of 10: The best way to set them is on flat vertical surfaces (such as walls and sides of big crates) near the floor. You could also set them on floors and ceilings, but they'd be easier to avoid that way except in narrow passages.
  • 5 of 10: If you ever set one wrong, or if you come across ones that were set by someone else, you can move up to the rivet part and pick it up. (Note that you never have to worry about accidentally triggering a trap rivet yourself, even if you're not the one who set it.)
  • 6 of 10: Later in the game, you'll get a speargun that's equivalent to the original Bioshock's crossbow, including the fact that it has electrified-wire-style trap ammo.
  • 7 of 10: Trap spears are attached to electrified wires that are set across a path that someone (like you or an enemy) might want to take. You can take out a trap spear by running into it and letting it zap you, but that'll cost you a bit of health.
  • 8 of 10: As for using your own trap spears, you'll have to be more careful than with trap rivets, since trap spears won't "recognize" you and let you pass unharmed. That means you can't lead enemies back through them unless you set them fairly high up and then crouch-walk back under them after getting an enemy's attention -- and that usually doesn't work very well.
  • 9 of 10: Reserve them for when you spot enemies in the distance who haven't seen you yet. You can set some trap spears up in the area between you and the enemies, then get their attention by sniping at them with the rivet gun. Hide around a corner, and they'll hopefully run into your trap spears and be killed.
  • 10 of 10: Well-placed trap spears can also be useful in situations like ADAM gathers, since you know when and where the enemies will show up before they do. Just remember not to "paint yourself into a corner," so to speak.
