Bioshock 2 Hints

Drill-Only Playthru Tips

  • 1 of 8: The most important tip is to use plasmids to their fullest extent. If you're used to playing through the game using mainly guns for dealing damage, you're going to have to radically alter your approach to combat. Telekinesis in particular will become indispensable, allowing you to inflict serious ranged damage by throwing heavy or explosive items at enemies.
  • 2 of 8: You'll also need to buy more plasmid slots and plasmids at Gatherer's Garden machines than you're probably used to in order to increase your offensive arsenal. That'll cost a lot more ADAM, which will make deciding what to get at any particular time a lot harder -- especially if you rescue all of the little sisters instead of harvesting them, which all true "hard mode" players will insist on doing.
  • 3 of 8: Due to your increased reliance on plasmids, you'll have a much harder time keeping yourself fully stocked in EVE hypos. You'll have to frequently buy them from vending machines to keep from running low.
  • 4 of 8: You'll also have to learn to use the drill more effectively than you did in the past, especially before you get the drill dash ability. Use plasmids on enemies when they're at a distance, then hide around a corner and wait for them to come to you for an Electro-Bolt-and-drill-whack combo.
  • 5 of 8: To empower your drill and reduce the amount of EVE your plasmids consume, fully upgrade the drill at the first three "Power to the People" weapon upgrade machines you find, and permanently splice in all drill-related and EVE-saving tonics as soon as you can get them.
  • 6 of 8: You must also use hacked security devices as often as possible. Always hack rather than destroy security cameras and turrets, and use the Hacking Tips to have two friendly security bots with you most of the time. Once you start getting mini-turrets, use them frequently to make tough fights easier. (Remember that mini-turrets are "legal" since you're allowed to use the hack tool on this type of playthru.)
  • 7 of 8: Even with all of that, the tougher fights (like during ADAM gathers and with big sisters) will still be a major problem. It'll be far too easy to run out of first aid kits, EVE hypos, and/or drill fuel during such fights. Whenever you can, arrange for those fights to happen close to a hacked vending machine that sells those items. That way, you can quickly buy a few more during combat if you have to.
  • 8 of 8: Using the research camera once you get it is allowed by this playthru's rules, but remember that you can't use any weapons other than the drill and plasmids to increase your research score. That's no problem with weaker enemies, since you can get an A+ research grade just about every time by using Electro Bolt and drill attacks on them. With tougher enemies like big sisters, you'll have to use all three types of drill attacks (drilling, drill bashing, and drill dashing) plus every damaging plasmid you've got. If you do it right, you'll find yourself getting very high research scores despite the lack of weapon variety.
