A Note About the Hints
The game is divided up into six parts that are numbered with Roman numerals, and each part is divided into tasks for Darren to do. To find out what your current tasks are, bring up Darren's diary. At first, you'll only be able to view one page, which will contain your current task. After you get a copy of your police report, you'll have a multi-page diary that you can navigate by clicking on the two displayed pages to turn them. You can also click on the "contents" tab near its top left corner and choose a task to jump to from a list.
This hint file has six hint sections, one for each part of the game. Each hint section has a list of all the tasks you can get in that part of the game. They're usually listed in the order that you get them, but are sometimes listed in the best or most logical order to work on them instead. It's sometimes possible to do tasks in a different order, though you may find yourself stuck on a task until after you've completed other tasks. When this happens, look at the tasks listed above the one you're stuck on and see which ones you haven't finished yet.
