The Black Mirror Hints

How does this screwy grandfather's clock work?

  • 1 of 12: Ask a screwy grandfather. Or try playing around with the clock's setting and the odd "needle" above the clock face.
  • 2 of 12: To set the clock's time, click on the clockface and then move the mouse cursor around to get the clock's hands to move. When they're where you want them, click again to release the clock hands and get the cursor back.
  • 3 of 12: Maybe something will happen if you set the clock to a certain time.
  • 4 of 12: If only you knew the correct time to use to set the clock. Look around the study for a clue.
  • 5 of 12: Are there any three- or four-digit secret codes lying around anywhere?
  • 6 of 12: They may be in Roman numerals, like the clock's numbers are.
  • 7 of 12: Look above the bookcases along the right side of the room.
  • 8 of 12: The number above the rightmost fully-visible bookcase is interactive, so it's obviously important.
  • 9 of 12: It's MCXX, which translates to 1000 + 100 + 10 + 10 = 1120.
  • 10 of 12: That could be made to look like a clock time by just inserting a colon! Try setting the clock to 11:20.
  • 11 of 12: Make the little hand point between the XI and the XII and the big hand point directly at the center of the IIII (which is an alternate way to write IV in Roman numerals).
  • 12 of 12: When that's done, click again to get the cursor back, then click on the needle at the top. Surprise!
