What is black when bought, red when used, and gray when thrown out?
1 of 7: The answer is not some abstract, philosophical thing like "love" or "idea" -- it's an actual, physical item that you can buy, use, and then throw out.
2 of 7: It is something which, during its "lifetime", goes through a metamorphosis of a kind.
3 of 7: When it's ready to be thrown out, it isn't in the same condition as when it was bought.
4 of 7: While it is being used, it "glows" red.
5 of 7: ...and is extremely hot.
6 of 7: The answer is COAL, since it's black when you buy it, glows red when it's being burned for fuel, and turns gray and ashen-looking after it's used up and cools off.
7 of 7: NOTE: If you have a version of the game that has a five-letter pillar for this riddle, then the answer is KOLEN, the Dutch word for coal.
