The Black Mirror Hints

What can I do with this globe in the central part of the library?

  • 1 of 14: Does anything about the yellow ball and pegs on the board inside the globe strike a chord?
  • 2 of 14: Big yellow ball in the middle... circular tracks around the yellow ball... nine pegs on the tracks...
  • 3 of 14: It should be fairly obvious that the big yellow ball in the center represents the sun, and the nine pegs are for the nine planets of the solar system.
  • 4 of 14: But it's a pretty lousy solar system model if it just uses nine identical pegs for the planets.
  • 5 of 14: Notice that the pegs have indented tops. Also notice the nine indentations along the right border of the globe.
  • 6 of 14: Samuel said there's something missing....
  • 7 of 14: Before you can do anything useful with the globe contraption, you have to find the nine painted wooden balls that represent the nine planets.
  • 8 of 14: Once you have the box of planets, return to the globe and click the box from inventory on any of the nine holes along the globe's rim (or click the box on the globe while not in the close-up view). That will put the planets in the holes in order of size.
  • 9 of 14: Now you need to figure out which peg each planet goes on.
  • 10 of 14: To place a planet, click on it to pick it up, then either left-click it on an empty peg to place it there, or right-click anywhere to put the planet back in its slot along the rim.
  • 11 of 14: To place the planets on the correct pegs, you'll need to combine knowledge of what order the planets are in with what relative size each one is. (Also, knowing something about the general appearance of the individual planets can help.)
  • 12 of 14: If you need a review of the order of the planets, or their relative sizes, you could look them all up in an encyclopedia or see the following information sections. (NOTE: Some encyclopedias may not list the information correctly, such as the old 1979 Funk & Wagnalls set.)
  • 13 of 14: Carefully put the planets on their pegs in order based on the above information.
