I know where James' cell is, but how do I get the key to open it?

  • 1 of 17: As Ralph told you, Dr. Smith has the key. He's now back at his little guard post down the hall, preventing you from going back that way.
  • 2 of 17: You're going to have to rig some elaborate trap for him so that you can "borrow" his keys without him being able to protest. You're in an asylum, so it's high time you got craaaazy on these clowns!
  • 3 of 17: Check out the little alcove with the bench and light on the right side of the screen near James' cell.
  • 4 of 17: Notice that both the switch and the wire leading up to the overhead light are interactive.
  • 5 of 17: If you try the wire, Samuel will say that he would do something with it if it weren't live.
  • 6 of 17: So use the switch to turn off the light first.
  • 7 of 17: Now when you click on the wire, Samuel will rip it out of the light and toss it on the floor.
  • 8 of 17: Maybe you could make a big puddle of water on the floor with the wire in it, stand on the couch and yell for the doctor, and hit the switch when he comes by and steps in the water!
  • 9 of 17: Unfortunately, even though it's raining outside and there's a fountain nearby, there's no way to make a large puddle of water on the floor. What else could become charged with electricity?
  • 10 of 17: Metal also conducts electricity!
  • 11 of 17: Maybe you could do something with the window's fencing.
  • 12 of 17: Click on the wire on the floor to pick it up, then click the wire-shaped cursor on the fencing to attach it.
  • 13 of 17: Now you need some way to lure Dr. Smith here, preferably a way that won't reveal that there's an extra person in the house.
  • 14 of 17: Do you have any noisemakers in inventory that you could use?
  • 15 of 17: Despite its mysterious disappearance in the old mine in Chapter II, the musical jewel box from William's study is back in inventory (just in time!).
  • 16 of 17: Use it on the fencing after connecting the wire up to set the trap and get it sprung. (Interesting how Samuel can retrieve the music box without getting zapped, huh?)
  • 17 of 17: Once the doc's down, frisk him with a right-click to find his keys. They'll open James' cell so you can go inside and search it.
