So how do I get to the secret underground area that James told of?

  • Where do I start the search?
• 2 of 11: Once you're in the cellar, search its floor for small square sewer access grates.
• 3 of 11: There are three of them. One is near the exit to the kitchen, another is near the grinder where Bates was sharpening cutlery earlier in the game, and the other is in the rear portion of the cellar.
• 4 of 11: Just examining them won't tell Samuel which one to try, and he can't afford to make any mistakes. If he climbs down through the wrong grating, he could be swept away and drowned.
• 5 of 11: You need a way to test each of the three sewer grates from above to see which one has no water flowing under it since that one would be the secret underground entrance.
• 6 of 11: Maybe if you tried dropping small metallic objects through the grates, you could listen for a "ping" or a "splash."
• 7 of 11: There's only one small metallic item that you have more than one of, though that may not be obvious at first.
• 8 of 11: Try dropping the coin from the wallet down one of the sewer grates.
• 9 of 11: Listen to the sound the coin makes.
• 10 of 11: If Samuel hears a splash and says he can't use that grate, then right-click on the wallet to get another coin and go try another grate.
• 11 of 11: It turns out that the grate near the grinder is the one to take. After dropping a coin down it, use it as an exit.
