Broken Sword: Shadow Of The Templars (Director's Cut) Hints

How can I solve the substitution cipher?

  • 1 of 11: The easiest way to do this is to think about words, names, and places we already know, and look for patterns of symbols that those words might fit into. Each letter of the alphabet is made up of one symbol, and all of those symbols in the document represent the same letter.
  • 2 of 11: So, for example, a single symbol on its own with spaces either side really has to be either an A or an I, since those are the only letters that work on their own in a sentence.
  • 3 of 11: Try those out first, switch in some A's and I's and see if you can complete any other words, and begin to move from there.
  • 4 of 11: Try to think who the letter might be addressed to. Where did we just find this, and at whose desk?
  • 5 of 11: What's Carchon's first name?
  • 6 of 11: His first name is Pierre, and, the letter is addressed to him. The first six symbols are the word P-I-E-R-R-E.
  • 7 of 11: The rest of the puzzle should fall into place pretty quickly now.
  • 8 of 11: The only letters that are not used are Q, V, and Z.
  • 9 of 11: X is used, but only in the very last character, like a kiss or an initial.
  • 10 of 11: The solution in full is listed in the next hint:
  • 11 of 11: PIERRE. FULL REPORT TO FOLLOW. BUT THIS IS TOO URGENT TO WAIT. ARNO AND YAMADA BOTH DEAD. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. INDEED IT SEEMS THAT ALL OF US WHO CAME TOGETHER IN JULY ARE IN DANGER. TAKE GREAT CARE. X
