Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon Hints
How do I solve the "second test of wisdom"?
of 13: The test proposed by Anubis is a simple variant on the classic logic puzzle that comes in many different forms.
of 13: The basic puzzle is that there are three entities (in this case, the killer, the witness, and the brother of the murdered man) who are antagonists, and cannot be left alone. As long as they are in the presence of Horus, there is no problem. But they must all be moved to the other side of the river without leaving them together without Horus present. And the challenge is to accomplish this in only 7 trips by Horus.
of 13: To move any piece, select it from the panel, then select the panel to have Horus transport that character to the other side of the river.
of 13: Examine the relationships: the killer and witness can't be left together; the killer and brother can't be left together.
of 13: What is the common element to those two pairs?
of 13: The killer is the common element that cannot be left alone with either of the other two.
of 13: Which means the witness and brother can be left together unattended.
of 13: Therefore, the first character to be transported must be the killer.
of 13: Have Horus transport the killer across the river, and come back empty-handed. (That's two trips so far.)
of 13: Now take either character that remains (it doesn't matter which), and have Horus transport him to the other side. (Three trips.)
of 13: Since the killer cannot be left alone with anyone, place the killer back onto Horus, and have him carried back to the starting side. (Four trips.)
of 13: The "safe" pair is the witness and the brother. So now leave the killer and take the other one of this pair (i.e., the one you didn't take across already) and place him on Horus. Transport him across to the other side, so that the witness and brother are together. They may be left together safely, so bring Horus back empty-handed again. (Six trips.)
of 13: Horus can now safely transport the killer to join the other three, and the Second Test of Wisdom has been passed.
