Civilization II Hints

Republic Right Away

  • The following document is copyright 1996 by Seeker.

"People have it all wrong. No matter what level I play at, I always go for
Republic, not Monarchy. It only takes a handful of advances, and the trade rewards are so much greater. Advance 1 is Phalanx, the 2nd is Granary, 3rd is Temple. After that, pick whichever advance leads fastest to Republic. Exception: Philosophy.  If you are ahead, you can widen your lead by choosing Philosophy and getting a freebie advance, which will be Republic in all likelihood.  While waiting for Republic, build lots of new cities, explore, build a Granary and then a Temple (Temple first at deity level). Build a Settler for every city too.  When you are researching Republic, irrigate those grasslands.  When you get Republic, revolt immediately.  WARNING!  Do not go off on a tangent looking for some advance that looks neat. IF YOU DISCOVER TOO MANY ADVANCES BEFORE REPUBLIC YOU ARE DOOMED. Despotism technology growth will slow to a crawl and your techier neighbors will bury you. With every advance, the cost of the next advance goes up. The corrolary to this is do not trade for technology unless the technolo
gy they offer is on the path to Republic. This is one of the few times I refuse to trade for technology. Once you discover Republic, trade like mad to fill in your technological base.  Of course my game style is peaceful growth, not conquest. If you are a crazy nut psycho conqueror, perhaps Monarchy would suit you better."

    * Note: I assume that when Seeker says

"Advance 1 is Phalanx, the 2nd is Granary, 3rd is Temple..."

    He actually means

"Get the technology that allows to build a Phalanx (ie Bronze Working), then the technology that allows to build a Granary (ie Pottery), and then the technology that allows to build a Temple (ie Ceremonial Buria)l".
