Trade Routes
An easy way to remedy small financial problems is to establish a trade route or two. Each city can have up to three trade routes and they will last the entire game unless replaced by a more lucrative route. The number of trade icons generated each turn by a trade route is dependent only on the amount of trade produced in the two cities involved. The initial bonus, however, depends on quite a few other factors. When a trade route is first established, a bonus of some amount of gold is added to your treasury immediately as well as an equal number of science flasks added to your current research. This value can grow to be quite large if you plan your routes carefully.
Your initial bonus is increased if the unit is a Freight unit, the cities are connected by Roads or Railroads, both cities have airports, if the source city has a super highway, or if the cities are on different continents. The initial bonus is actually reduced if both of the cities involved belong to
your empire. Supplying demands also helps to increase your initial bonus. Uranium and oil provide the biggest bonus increase, in that order. These are followed by spice, silk, gems, and gold. The smallest bonus is obtained with the trade of all other goods.
Finally, the earlier in the game you establish the route, the bigger the bonus. When you have a few spare resources, try and make a few caravans (or freights) and establish some trade routes. This small effort will stay with you the entire game.
