Conspiracies Hints

General Gameplay Tips

  • 1 of 13: The version of the manual that I read doesn't mention it, but you can hold down either SHIFT key while moving around to run instead of walking.
  • 2 of 13: Right-clicking is very important. Always right-click on inventory items when you gain them in order to find out more about them. Also, right-click on everything in the surrounding area for useful descriptions.
  • 3 of 13: You can "lose" the game and be forced to restore a save in several different places (especially in dialogue with important characters), so be sure to press F4 to save every so often. There are a huge number of save slots available, and you can even have different sets of saves for different playthrus or for other people who are also playing the game on your computer.
  • 4 of 13: An important note about savegames is that the latest save won't always be the one in the top left corner on the scrolling save list. Sometimes it's not even in the top row (though it's usually in the top two rows). To make sure of which save is the latest, you'll have to check the time and date stamp underneath each save's thumbnail screenshot.
  • 5 of 13: Another thing to note about losing the game is that it's (theoretically) impossible to get stuck to where you can't ever win the game. The game won't allow you to use up an item before it's needed, or anything like that. Any time you hopelessly mess something up in some way, you'll immediately get the "GAME OVER, YOU LOSE!!!" screen to clue you in to the fact that you missed something vital or need to do things differently.
  • 6 of 13: So if you ever do get stuck in the game, it's probably because you either haven't talked to someone about an important topic, or you haven't found and tried using all of the takeable items in that area or other areas you can get to. It's usually fairly easy to get all you need from a conversation by trying all of the dialogue options. If one doesn't work for you, you can usually try another one and get the same response as you would have if you'd chosen it first. As for finding objects, I created a "Finding Objects" section in each location to help with that.
  • 7 of 13: Several of the puzzles in the game will make little or no sense to many players. The only way to solve them without getting all the answers from this hint file would be to thoroughly and repeatedly apply the Golden Rule of Adventure Games that says when you're stuck, you should try every inventory item on every other inventory item and on every untakeable item in the game areas you can currently reach. Unless there's someone around whom you haven't talked to thoroughly, then your problem is undoubtedly that you haven't found an item yet (see previous tip) or haven't tried using it in every way imaginable.
  • 8 of 13: NOTE: If two inventory items are combinable, you can't just click one on the other in either order. It has to be a certain way. For instance, if clicking the code sheet on the coded fax doesn't decode the fax, then try clicking the coded fax on the code sheet.
  • 9 of 13: Since your inventory is limited to 27 objects at once, and there are far more takeable objects than that, you should carefully keep track of where you drop objects when you're forced to do so. Or better yet, always travel to a certain area (like Nick's home) to drop stuff.
  • 10 of 13: A large part of progressing in the game involves getting new destinations on the map to travel to. Most are gotten by talking to people about certain topics or right-clicking on items in your inventory to examine them.
  • 11 of 13: If you ever try to do something and Nick says, "I must do something else first," then you're on the right track, but you aren't quite there yet. For instance, he'll say that when you click on a certain locked box. Naturally, what you need to do first is find the key. Also, he may say that when you're trying to travel somewhere. There are a couple of possibilities for this. One is that you need to call Thanos Pekas on the vid phone to report in, and the other is that your inventory is full and you need to drop at least one item because you're going to automatically get one at your destination.
  • 12 of 13: Some of the puzzles, and particularly the object-hunting, would be easier if you go to the game's Options screen, click on "Display," and adjust the Gamma, Brightness, and Contrast settings to make things look brighter. There are a couple of places in the game where I would never have found something vital if I hadn't upped the default Gamma setting by several notches.
  • 13 of 13: The hints-by-location sections are in the order that you can first travel to them and do something useful, and can therefore be used as a form of game outline. I also have a "How do I get here?" question at the top of every hint section. These features can help guide you through the major points of the game or get you back on track if you get lost.
