What's the deal with Java?
Java is a member of a humanoid species similar to the Neanderthals, befriended by Martin in an earlier case. He's intelligent, but his intelligence doesn't include the ability to speak in any understandable way; he can understand you when you talk to him, though. Martin refers to him as his assistant, and you'll see him doing household chores too. He's a sidekick; what more is there to say?
