Daria's Inferno Hints
General Tips and Strategies
These hints (and "Daria's Inferno" itself) assume the player is a regular viewer of the "Daria" TV show, at least enough to have basic familiarity with the major characters. If you're new to "Daria", you may want to watch a few episodes or flip through a copy of the book "The Daria Diaries" to learn who's who.
Compared to most commercial adventure games, "Daria's Inferno" is not a difficult game to complete. It is quite linear, and aside from a few items in early levels that are useful later, the game sections are independent of one another. Most of the puzzles are straightforward and can be solved by fully exploring all locations, picking up everything you can, and talking to everyone you meet. Many of the characters will simply tell you what they want you to bring them.
A few items and stairways are placed in corners just off-screen, so you can't see them unless you walk Daria there. Also, you have to be relatively close to an object or character before you can interact with it. If you're not close enough, the arrow pointer will not change to a hand or mouth icon.
For most players, the biggest snag will be dodging the various annoyances throughout Lawndale. In many cases there will be an item you can use to temporarily stop them or get rid of them entirely, but in a few instances there is nothing you can do. The game's sprite collision detection is a bit quirky at times, making it hard to tell how close you can get to an irritant until it's too late. I've found that it's slightly easier to get by them by moving Daria above rather than below. If you do get bumped into, you'll have a few seconds of "invulnerability", as Daria makes a sarcasic remark, to get away again. Each nuisance has a different "irritation" factor, and if Daria gets too fed up with it, she'll poof back to the main screen. Fortunately, there is no penalty for this, and at times it can actually be useful for shortening travel distances between rooms.
