Diablo and Hellfire Hints

The Warrior

  • The Warrior is the strongest character type and the easiest to use at the start.  Wade through the bad guys, and as you get new levels, put most of your new ability into strength and dexterity.  Avoid putting anything into magic, unless there is some spell you have to have right away.  Chances are good you will be able to get all the magic you need as a fighter through a few good enchanted rings or an amulet.  Dexterity helps your chances of hitting and boosts your armor rating, so it is almost as important as strength as you start out.  A Warrior's maximum dexterity is 60.  His maximum strength is a Herculean 250, with a generous possible vitality of 100.  Magic will only go up to 50, so don't count on magic to save your hide every time.

Get good armor and two sets of weapons as soon as you can.  Your main mode of attack should be sword and shield, since you will be able to get more magical bonuses from two items than from a single bow, ax, or staff.  (However Butcher's cleaver works well in the early levels, so you might want to use it there.)  Keep a good bow handy too -- there are times when you will want to attack a foe through a barrier, like a grill or a lava channel. There are also times when many foes are shooting at you from a distance, and you will need a good range weapon.

In the early levels, where there are a lot of skeletons, you might want to consider a club, which works best on the bones of these monsters.  "You can cut flesh, but you must crush bone."  as Griswold says.

As a Warrior, you will need only a simple strategy.  Close in for the kill, and if they are starting to gang up on you, back off to a place where you can fight them one at a time.  A doorway is a good example of this.  If you find a good spot from which to fight, use the shift key to hold your position while you fight.  This way, if you miss with a swing, you will not move out of position.

It is especially important for a Warrior to have fast attack, quick recovery, and the ability to knock back opponents.  Look for magical items to give you these benefits.  A quick attack will often let you hit and win, as the opponent will never get a good chance to hit you.  If you cannot recover quickly, you will spend all your time recovering if you are hit by your opponent first.

If you save good equipment, you should be able to beat Diablo the first time you meet him.
