Diablo and Hellfire Hints

Networked Play

  • One of the really nice features of Diablo is that you can play it over the net with up to three other players, for no charge beyond your normal internet connect charges.  Just get your normal provider connected, and then start Diablo running.  You'll automatically be taken to the fastest Battle.Net server available, where you can start a new game or join one in progress.

A few pointers on etiquette on the net version are in order.  Some people don't liked to be killed.  You can resurrect a fellow player after you kill them, but they may not appreciate the experience.  You can collect their ear as a souvenir of the experience, but it is not a good way to make friends.  This is especially true as a magic user, since your magic can easily damage other players.  Stick to Holy Bolt, which is always player-safe, or use tight pattern spells, like Firebolt or Lightning.

The same way some players don't like to be killed, some players love to kill other players.  If you don't want to be killed, try to be a little careful about what games you join, and keep you eyes open to see if your fellow players seem to be making too many "mistakes" near you.  Your best defense is to hit escape at the first sign of trouble, and find a new game.

Be on the lookout for good equipment as an early-level player on the net.  Often the party will have players of different abilities, and higher players will often give starting players a good piece of armor, or a weapon to help get them started.  Don't expect this to be an unlimited gravy-train, though.  They had to work their way up, and you will too.

If you find winning too easy at normal difficulty, you can also join games in nightmare mode.  It isn't easy -- you have been warned.
