General Item Tips
It is a good idea to make yourself a helmet with two skull gems socketed. This allows mana and life regeneration. Try to get the Infernal Tools set if you can, since it will add plus two to all your skill levels. If you are playing the Necromancer as a general, you don't need to have as high a defense rating, so keep looking for items with good magical bonuses. If you like to get in there and fight, get the highest rated armor you can, regardless of the bonus.
