General Combat Tips
I have found that the best attack strategy is a combination of Zeal and Thorns. With Zeal as your primary attack, you will do more damage to more targets in a very small amount of time. When you are surrounded and you attack with Zeal, it is completely possible to take down three, four, five, or even more of monsters surrounding you. With Thorns equipped, any damage done to you will be dealt back to the attacking enemy increased. This combination allows you to just jump right into the fray and aids in the destroying of especially powerful enemies.
