Is this game too scary for my kids? Or me?
That depends on your definition of scary. Yes, there are occasional things that jump out at you, and the game is filled with terrified teenagers having bad things happen to them. On the other hand, the peril is mostly a matter of suggestion and creepy noises, with no actual blood/gore/bodies/zombies anywhere. It's "Blair Witch Project" scary, not "Night of the Living Dead" scary.
