Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove Hints

"All life's variance ... "

  • 1 of 9: The poem reads, "All life's variance of form, mass, and hue / Soon wither to me 'neath the grate and the flue."
  • 2 of 9: Grates and flues are parts of the structure of a fireplace; the grate is the thing that holds up the logs (I think), and the flue is something up in the chimney.
  • 3 of 9: When things "wither" in a fireplace, what do they turn into?
  • 4 of 9: Ashes are what you want here, and you're going to have to make your own.
  • 5 of 9: That is, you're going to build a fire in the hotel fireplace, then put it out and collect the ashes. Take the axe --
  • 6 of 9: -- and go collect some firewood.
  • 7 of 9: Put the wood in the fireplace and light it with the lighter --
  • 8 of 9: -- and then, whimpering a little, put it out with the fire extinguisher.
  • 9 of 9: Finally, collect the ashes in the urn, and you're done.
