Discworld Noir Hints
Do I need to read the Discworld novels to enjoy the game?
No, not really, though you ought to for your own enjoyment.
Unlike the first two DW games, this one isn't based on any existing Pratchett books, though there are a good many familiar characters (like Nobby and Gaspode). If you have read the DW books, this one would seem to take place just after "Men At Arms" chronologically.
If you're completely unfamiliar with the Discworld, think of a typical medieval fantasy world with disturbing echoes of contemporary Britain and America ("World and mirror of worlds," Pratchett calls it), and you won't be far off. The docs that come with the game are also some help, and pretty funny in their own right.
