Discworld Hints

What am I supposed to do in this act?

  • 1 of 13: The silly conversation at the city gates should give you a clue if nothing else.
  • 2 of 13: You need to defeat the dragon.
  • 3 of 13: But the odds of doing so are a million to one.
  • 4 of 13: *Exactly* a million to one.
  • 5 of 13: So it follows (well, sort of, maybe, possibly) that you need to set the odds to be exactly a million to one and then you can defeat the dragon.
  • 6 of 13: The guard on the left at the city gate will be able to tell you how to fix the odds, provided you know what it takes to be a hero.
  • 7 of 13: Now you need to figure out the right combination of those things to set the odds properly.
  • 8 of 13: If you try asking about each of the eight items (as listed in the question above) separately and then about a few of them in combination, you should be able to figure out how the odds are calculated.
  • 9 of 13: Each item has a value.  Take all the items you're combining, add up their values, and there are your odds -- just add the "to one" part.
  • 10 of 13: There is only one way to combine the items to get one million.
  • 11 of 13: A posing pouch is 50,000; a birthmark is 75,000; a mask is 100,000; a magical talisman is 125,000; camel-flage is 175,000; a spell and a moustache are each 200,000; and a sword that goes "ting" is 225,000.
  • 12 of 13: Those all add up to 1,150,000.
  • 13 of 13: If you exclude the pouch and the mask, you'll have odds that are exactly a million to one.
