DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil Hints
I finally made it to the end! How can I destroy this Bertruger-tongued demon?
1 of 15: That's the maledict, and he's one heck of a malefactor. His health rating is 2,500, and he can hit you with a variety of painful attacks. His fireballs hit for 18 damage (up to 18 from splash), his firewall causes 13 damage per second, and the flaming asteroids he sometimes pelts you with cause 20 damage each (up to 20 from splash). And that's not to mention that he occasionally summons a flock of forgottens to swarm you. Ouch!
2 of 15: Fortunately, unlike the cyberdemon from the main game's finale, he's vulnerable to all your weapons, including such all-time favorites as the rocket launcher and the BFG.
3 of 15: Also, there are two dead "soul charge" corpses lying around on either side of the huge skull, and you really should've entered this area with a full three charges thanks to all the bodies lying around near the teleporter. That'll give you a lot of Bloodstone time.
4 of 15: Here's the catch: the maledict can fly around very quickly and twistily, and will often dive out of sight. You do *not* want to waste a Bloodstone charge when he's out of sight, since the charge will almost certainly wear off before he's visible (and shootable) again.
5 of 15: When you first enter his area, he starts off with a flamewall attack and then goes into this repeating attack pattern:
1) forgotten-summoning pass 2) hover-and-fireball routine 3) forgotten-summoning pass 4) hover-and-fireball from a different position 5) flamewall attack
6 of 15: Flamewall attacks are very easy to dodge as long as you're watching for them. As for the forgotten-summoning passes, have the grabber gun ready to quickly deal with all four of the forgotten that appear. You should be able to trash them all quickly and painlessly since they dive-bomb you one at a time. (TIP: Aim low, since they dive low before they get close enough to you for you to grab them.)
7 of 15: Once the forgotten are destroyed, the maledict should be about ready to hover on one side or another of the island and throw fireballs at you. This is the ideal time to use a Bloodstone charge -- you'll be invincible to the fireballs and will be able to hit the maledict with one or two fully-charged BFG blasts. It shouldn't be hard to hit him since he's mostly stationary during this phase. (NOTE: Head shots do no extra damage to him, so you might as well aim for the main body.)
8 of 15: TIP: If you still have some Bloodstone time left after firing off your BFG blast(s), switch to the chaingun or rocket launcher and blast him some more. If you do this, it should only take two Bloodstone charges for you to damage him enough for him to go into his second attack pattern (see below).
9 of 15: ALTERNATIVE: Instead of using the BFG at this stage, you could use the grabber to return some of his fireballs to him. They'll do a huge 250 points of damage for each direct hit! Be sure to hit him with at least two returned fireballs each time if you want to get him to go into his second attack pattern after the second time.
10 of 15: TIP: When he's doing his flamewall thing, go for one of the Bloodstone soul charge corpses that's near the giant skull. That's the best time to "harvest" those souls since you're not busy doing any shooting. You'll want to have gotten at least one of them by the time the second attack pattern begins.
11 of 15: When the maledict is hurt enough to realize that his first attack pattern isn't helping him any, he'll start on his second one, which is:
1) sit on top of the giant skull and call down flaming meteors 2) flamewall attack
12 of 15: When he lands on the skull, immediately use the Bloodstone and let him have it with BFG charges (or rockets, plasma, etc. if you run out of BFG charges before he dies). Another alternative is to use the grabber gun to grab flaming asteroids and fire them at him. A grabber-fired asteroid rates a whopping 400 points of damage! (However, I've always found the asteroids to be very hard to grab onto, making this a less desirable strategy.)
13 of 15: Your Bloodstone effect will usually run out before the flaming meteor storm stops, so you'll want to be in a relatively safe place when that happens. The only totally safe place is on the very tip of the island that's opposite the side with the skull. However, it's usually more convenient to be beside the skull, scrunched up as far as you can go against one of its horns. You'll usually take some damage there, but not too much. You'll be okay if you lost little or no health during the maledict's first attack cycle.
14 of 15: So the best thing to do during the second attack cycle is to stay on one side or the other of the skull and use Bloodstone charges and the BFG on the maledict, hiding from the asteroids once your Bloodstone charge is used up, and not forgetting to dodge the flamewall attack that will happen right before the maledict sits down on the skull again.
15 of 15: If you hit the maledict with enough damage each time, it should only take two Bloodstone charges to finish him off and get the ending cut-scene, in which he chomps you playfully and demands his artifact back. He'll get it, much to his dismay (and dismemberment). Ha, ha! I guess that's the last we'll ever see of ol' "Bertie" Bertruger!
