DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil Hints
Ionized Plasma Levitator (Grabber Gun)
Damage: indirect (from throwing things at enemies)
First Found: Erebus Level 1
This little beauty is DOOM 3's version of the Half-Life 2 gravity gun. Can't let the Half-Lifers have all the fun, can we? (NOTE: The grabber shares the #1 weapon slot with your fists, so to get it back out after using another weapon, press the 1 key.)
Those of you familiar with Half-Life 2's gravity gun will be a bit confused at first due to the fact that there's no alt-fire method for picking up items. You use the primary trigger (left mouse button by default) for both the picking up and the throwing functions.
To knock a nearby item away from you (or slush dead bodies), aim at the item to get the spinning circle cursor that looks a lot like a CD, then just tap the fire button without holding it down. To pick up a nearby item and hold onto it while moving it around, aim at it to get the CD-like cursor and then press and hold the fire button. The item will be thrown when you release the fire button, or dropped gently if you hold onto the fire button until the gun runs out of charge (it'll beep several times right before doing this).
If you're going to pick up an item and then throw it at a particular target, you'll have to turn to face the target and release the fire button quickly after picking up the item -- if you're not fast enough, the item will be dropped. The gun doesn't take long to recharge, but it doesn't have much of a charge, either.
You can use the grabber to save on ammo by picking up things like containers and rubble and throwing them at enemies. Starting with the "Erebus Level 2" level, you'll often have explosive barrels available to pick up and throw -- they'll explode upon impact! Also, you can use the grabber to "shoot" or pull in small enemies, like the forgotten. It's fun to be able to pull them in and then fire them into a solid wall to smash them into tiny pieces! And don't forget about grabbing enemy projectiles like imp fireballs and throwing them right back at the attacker. This can be hard to do until you've practiced it a bit, but it's well worth it -- the damage a projectile does *vastly* increases when it's caught and tossed by the grabber gun.
You don't have to be next to something for the grabber to target it. You can pull small things to you that are way out of reach, like supplies that you can see up on inaccessible ledges. Unblocking passageways is also sometimes possible. For example, in the room you get the grabber in, find the UAC container that's blocking a wall niche. Use the grabber to pick up the container, then turn and fire it off somewhere out of the way. Now crouch-walk into the hole it was blocking to find some health and a suit of armor.
