DOOM 3 Hints

General Tips

  • 1 of 8: One of the most commonly used strategies for this kind of game is to quickly and recklessly run through a new, unexplored area right after saving your game, and then restore your save and approach the same area with your new knowledge of its layout and where all the enemies are hiding. This allows you to minimize injuries and ammo consumption while clearing out the area (or just running through it if that turns out to work).
  • 2 of 8: When you can't get through a door (especially if it's jammed and not just locked), always look for an alternative route nearby, including other doors, broken windows, utility ladders, small holes and crawlways, etc. If no such things exist, then you're probably meant to unlock the door with a key or upgraded security clearance. (Note that some doors unlock themselves after you kill all of the monsters in the area.)
  • 3 of 8: There are many caches of supplies (health kits, armor, weapons, ammo, etc.) in little side areas and hidden alcoves that you don't have to enter in order to make it through the level. Always check under stairs and walkways, and in other dark and crouch-only areas for bonus items.
  • 4 of 8: Watch for small pushable crates and barrels that can be used to get up to items and access vents that you can't otherwise reach.
  • 5 of 8: The game is awfully dark in most areas, and the flashlight just doesn't cut it for many players. If you're one of them, you can go to the Options menu on the game's main menu screen and choose "System" to get a list of video and audio settings. One of them is "Brightness." Move its slider to the right to increase brightness. (Your monitor will also have some sort of brightness control you can fiddle with.)
  • 6 of 8: Jump-crouching is a useful stunt to be able to do in a few areas. It's primarily used to get you through narrow openings that aren't at floor level, such as small windows. To do a jump-crouch, you hit the jump key and then quickly press the crouch and forward keys (or hold the forward key the whole time to make it a bit easier). Thankfully, such a maneuver is never essential in finishing a level.
  • 7 of 8: If you ever find yourself stuck while trying to climb up a ladder, use the two strafing keys (A and D by default) to reposition yourself on the ladder slightly, then try going up again.
  • 8 of 8: When you're ready to click on the exit panel to finish a level and move on to the next one, consider going back through the current level (or parts of it) to pick up any spare health, armor, and ammo that you didn't need when you passed by it before. You can start the next level in much better shape if you do.
