DOOM 3 Hints

Combat Tips

  • 1 of 6: For most creatures, head shots do double damage. This isn't much of a factor when you're firing off a rocket or BFG blast, but it can be very useful when using the shotgun or bullet-firing weapons. Shoot 'em in the head!
  • 2 of 6: Going along with that tip is the hit-and-dodge tactic. Equip the shotgun and charge the creature you want to blast with it. Shoot it in the head as soon as you get within melee range of it, then quickly back away before it can use its melee attack on you. If it can throw something at you, be sure to strafe in order to dodge it. This tactic doesn't work very well against some creatures (like those with guns), but it can do very well against several demons, including the mighty hellknights.
  • 3 of 6: You can usually shoot down projectiles that monsters throw at you before they reach you. This includes the fireballs that cacodemons, hellknights, and imps throw at you as well as the revenants' rockets.
  • 4 of 6: With creatures that take cover and don't advance on you (zombies with guns often do this), it's sometimes possible to stand to where you can shoot them but they can't shoot you (because they keep hitting some obstruction with their fire).
  • 5 of 6: Many of the barrels in the game will explode when damaged. You can use them to help injure enemies by shooting the barrels when enemies are next to them. On the other hand, enemies can use the same tactic against you, so it might be wise to shoot exploding barrels from a safe distance before going past their location.
  • 6 of 6: As in the old DOOMs, you can sometimes trick creatures into fighting each other. However, this can't be done nearly as much in DOOM 3 as in the previous games. It mainly happens when a "lesser" creature accidentally shoots a "greater" one (like if a Z-sec zombie accidentally shot a revenant).
