Day of the Tentacle Hints

How do I open the safe?

  • 1 of 13: In case you didn't know, the safe is in Dr. Fred's office, behind the portrait.
  • 2 of 13: You will need to talk to several people in the present who can tell you something about Dr. Fred and the safe.
  • 3 of 13: Nurse Edna will tell you that Dr. Fred opens the safe while he's sleepwalking.  If only you could get him to go to sleep.
  • 4 of 13: Dr. Fred will tell you himself that he doesn't sleep because he makes himself stay awake all of the time by drinking coffee.
  • 5 of 13: You should try to keep him from drinking caffeine.
  • 6 of 13: Just pour some decaf from the kitchen in his cup.
  • 7 of 13: Don't even try to reach in the safe while Fred is opening it.  You'll need to find out what the combination is and then just wait until Fred leaves.
  • 8 of 13: Have you noticed that camera in the study?  Edna monitors those cameras.
  • 9 of 13: Get her to leave, and you'll be able to watch Fred.  See another question in this section to see what to do about her.
  • 10 of 13: The combination is going by too quickly to watch.  A slow motion replay might help you out here.
  • 11 of 13: There's a two-speed VCR, and Green Tentacle has the tape.
  • 12 of 13: Start by recording at the default SP speed, after inserting the tape.
  • 13 of 13: Then you can play the tape back at EP speed (rewind it first, of course) to get the combination.  Bernard will remember it, so you can just go and open the safe now.
