Dracula 3: The Path of the Dragon Hints

How can I figure out exactly what each of the four letters means?

  • 1 of 12: By using one of the books on the desk for a "trial run." If you interpret the four letters in the book correctly, you'll end up looking at a book slot that has a "ghost" (white cardboard placeholder) in it.
  • 2 of 12: Let's use the book on the left -- the one with the word-find puzzles in it. Its four letters are I, I, B, and V, in that order.
  • 3 of 12: Start by assuming that the first letter tells which alcove the book goes in, which is the most obvious way to do things.
  • 4 of 12: The first letter is I, so go to the library and examine the five alcoves' Latin inscriptions, keeping the letter I in mind.
  • 5 of 12: Four of the five inscriptions have I's in them, so let's make another assumption to narrow the possibilities down. Let's say that the first cataloguing letter is either the first or last letter of the correct alcove's inscription.
  • 6 of 12: None of them start with an I, and two of them end with an I, so apparently it's the last letter we need to match with.
  • 7 of 12: Since there are two possibilities ("Nil admirari" and "Memento mori"), go into both alcoves and scan the phrases at the tops of the bookcases to see if any of them start or end with our second letter (which is also an I).
  • 8 of 12: You'll find that the only match is the "Uti non abuti" bookcase in the "Nil admirari" alcove.
  • 9 of 12: So use the third cataloguing letter (B) to find the right shelf in that bookcase.
  • 10 of 12: Once again, there's only one possibility: the "Deneb" shelf that's next to the bottom of the case.
  • 11 of 12: Look at the slot on that shelf for the letter V to find the placeholder "ghost." That must be where the word-find book goes!
  • 12 of 12: So here's the summary. The first letter in the four-letter cataloguing "word" is the last letter of the inscription above the correct book alcove, the second letter is the last letter in the phrase above the correct bookcase, the third letter is the last letter in the word above the correct shelf, and the fourth letter is the letter that's directly under the correct book.
