Dracula 3: The Path of the Dragon Hints
How can I defuse this diabolical bomb setup?
of 14: Since opening the door further will set off the bomb, carefully examine the space between the open door and the doorframe.
of 14: There's a string that goes across the gap that must be connected to the bomb.
of 14: The string is just below the window that you can see in the room beyond. You'll get a red-lined gear cursor when you point at the string.
of 14: You obviously need to use something on the string to get rid of it.
of 14: The obvious thing to do would be to use the knife on the string to cut it.
of 14: However, that'll set off the bomb. You need to figure out how to cut the string without that happening.
of 14: Since the bomb will go off if the string either tightens (when you push the door open further) or loosens (when you cut the string with the knife or move away from the door), you clearly need to make sure the string will do neither when you cut it.
of 14: What do you have in inventory that you can use to fasten the string down in its current position?
of 14: The thumbtacks from the professor's office desk should do the trick.
of 14: Since you can't be sure which side of the string the bomb is on, you'd better tack down both sides.
of 14: After you pick up the thumbtacks, notice that you can use them on both sides of the visible bit of string, but not in the middle.
of 14: NOTE: It turns out that the bomb is on the other side of the door, so if you put your first thumbtack on the door side of the string, the thumbtack box will disappear. If you instead put your first thumbtack on the doorframe side of the string, you'll need to get the thumbtacks back out and put another one on the door side of the string.
of 14: When that's done, it'll be safe to cut the string with the knife, since the part of the string that's attached to the bomb will be held at its present tightness by your thumbtack.
of 14: You can then push the door all the way open and enter the room.
