How can I develop this formula?

  • 1 of 4: Let's use the letter N to represent the second test number, which is the number of marked granulocytes in the second sample, and the ? symbol to represent the unknown, which is the total number of granulocytes in the 1 ml blood sample.
  • 2 of 4: Since the idea is that the 100 marked granulocytes are N percent of the total number of granulocytes, we get this starting formula:

    100 = N% X ?
  • 3 of 4: Isolating the unknown and then working it out, we get:

    ? = 100 / N% = 100 / (N / 100) = 100 X (100 / N) = 10,000 / N
  • 4 of 4: So to calculate the answer, you'll need to divide 10,000 by the second test result number.
