Dragon Age: Origins Hints

Inventory Tips

  • 1 of 5: Inventory management can be a real pain in this game for several reasons. The main one is that you have a party inventory rather than each character having his own personal inventory, like in the Neverwinter Nights games.
  • 2 of 5: Also, NWN's "bag of holding" concept has been replaced with very expensive backpacks that you can buy to increase your party inventory capacity by a very small amount. Add to that the fact that you can't ever store items in containers anywhere, and you've got a real mess.
  • 3 of 5: The only solution is to equip everything you can on your characters (including the ones you don't currently have in your party), and keep visiting merchants and selling stuff off all the time, hoping you won't later need to buy back something that you sold. You do *not* want to ever have to destroy items just to make room in the party inventory so you can pick up more.
  • 4 of 5: Fortunately, most loot-filled areas will allow you to go back the way you came and exit at any time. This allows you to visit merchants and the party camp to get rid of stuff when your inventory is full, then return to pick up where you left off. When you're entering an area that you know won't let you leave until you're done with it, be sure to clear out your inventory as much as possible before entering.
  • 5 of 5: At least an item's weight isn't a factor. Every item takes up exactly one slot, which is the unit of measure for inventory capacity. Even stacked items take up only one slot, no matter how many of them you have (up to 99 for some items, and up to 10 for others). So even if your inventory is full, you can still keep buying and picking up stackable items like health poultices and lyrium potions as long as you already have at least one (and less than the stack limit) of that exact type of item.
